The tea industry in Assam province has issued a warning stating that tea growers are experiencing severe fertilizer (particularly urea) shortages and the 2011 production will be compromised, unless shortages are addressed without delay.
Urea, the most widely used fertilizer for tea crop, is commonly applied in three “splits”: March-April, June-July and August-September.
“Tea estates have not been able to apply urea in the second split and unless immediate supply is restored, tea production will be adversely affected and projected tea production and export targets cannot be met,” according to an Indian Tea Association communiqué,
The Indian Tea Association (ITA) has been in constant contact with the Assam government regarding the issue blamed on the breakdown of both available manufacturing units of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilisers Corporation Ltd (BVFCL). Tea industry professionals indicated that various dealers were taking advantage of the shortages by charging higher prices for the material available in the black market.
